The summertime can cause several things. Hot weather, high temperatures, and for so many health departments across the nation an increased number of diarrheal illness cases reported. We have yet to figure out a definitive answer to why these cases increase in the summer, but we have a few sources: increased outside gatherings, travel, and increased large gatherings due to holidays.

Diarrhea is no joke, and it can be defined (at least in the state of Oklahoma) as the passage of 3 or more loose stools per day. If this occurs for over 3 days, you should probably seek medical attention immediately. Do not wait it out. You could become severely dehydrated.
What causes diarrheal illness?
A LOT of things can make your stomach hurt depending on the person. Some diarrheal illnesses are caused but bacteria like salmonella, campylobacter, E.coli, and shigella. Parasites like cryptosporidium or cyclosporiasis can cause some.
When you come into contact with any of these bacteria or parasites, you will become ill at some point. The ways that you come into contact with these can vary. The most common ways that people get sick are exposure to raw or undercooked meat, swimming in untreated water, or sick food handlers. Exposures are not limited to this.
Is there treatment?
YES! Antibiotics typically can stop the symptoms associated with illness depending on the diagnosis. In a lot of cases, the body can pass the bacteria or parasites on its own without treatment.
How can I prevent diarrheal illness?
The best way to prevent diarrheal illness is impeccable hand hygiene! Make sure your hands are clean before eating or preparing food.
I hope you enjoyed this read! Have a nice week!
