Influenza Season is the time of year in the United States when influenza viruses usually circulate. The timing and duration of flu seasons varies, but flu activity often begins to increase in October onward. A peak in activity usually occurs from December to February.

Influenza, commonly shortened to just "the flu," is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. In high-risk groups (elderly, immunocompromised), it can be deadly. It is important that we know the signs and symptoms of the flu to properly stop the spread.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms can include:

  • fever or feeling feverish/chills.

  • cough.

  • sore throat.

  • runny or stuffy nose.

  • muscle or body aches.

  • headaches.

  • fatigue (tiredness)

  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

PREVENTION

Prevention of the flu is possible when done correctly. Here are a few prevention tips:

  • CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • If you are sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub (hand sanitizer).

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.

  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with viruses that cause flu.

TREATMENT

If you do get the flu, the CDC recommends that people stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone, except to get medical care or other necessities. Masking is ideal if you need to leave your home during that time. The fever should be gone without the need to use a fever-reducing medicine.

The flu is usually treated with antiviral medication that can be prescribed by a doctor. Antiviral medication works best when started early, such as one to two days after your flu symptoms begin. Always check with your doctor promptly if you are at higher risk of serious flu complications and you get flu symptoms.
